Create and manage chat folders
Overview
Use folders to organize your chats and find conversations faster.
This article explains how to create folders, add chats to them, and manage your folders on your phone and desktop.
Create and organize folders
To create a folder on your phone:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap Manage folders
- Tap on Create a folder if you don't have any folders yet, or New folder if you have at least one existing folder
- Enter a name for the folder
- Tap on the Arrow
(Android) or Next (iOS)Optional: Choose the chats you wish to add to the folder
- Tap on the Checkmark
in the bottom corner (Android) or Done in the top corner (iOS)
To create a folder on desktop:
- Open Viber on desktop
- Open the menu by clicking on your profile picture in the top-left corner
- Click on Settings
- Click Manage folders
- Click on New folder
- Enter a name for the folder
- Click on Create
To add a chat to a folder on your phone while creating a folder:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap on Manage folders
- Tap on New folder
- Enter a folder name (characters and emojis only)
- Tap on Next (iOS) or the Arrow
(Android)
- Select the chat(s) you want to add to the new folder
- Tap on Done
From the Folder management screen:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap on Manage folders
- Tap on the folder you want to add a chat
- Tap on Add chats to folder
- Select the chat(s) you want to add
- Tap on Done
From the Chats tab:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on Chats
- Long-tap (Android) or swipe left on (iOS) a chat you want to add to a folder
- Tap on Folder
- Select the folder(s) you want to add the chat to
- Tap on Done
To add a chat to a folder on your desktop:
From the Chats list:
- Right-click the chat you want to add to a folder
- In the context menu under Folder preferences
, click on the existing folder(s) you want to add the chat to OR drag-and-drop the chat on the desired folder
From the Folder management settings:
- Click on your profile picture
- Click on Settings
- Click on the Manage folders
tab
- Click on Add chats
- Select the chat(s) you want to add to the folder by clicking on them
- Click on Done
From the context menu:
- Right click / long-tap on the chat you wish to add to a folder
- Tap Add to folder (phone) / click Folder preferences
(desktop)
- Click / tap the folder you wish to add the chat to
Yes, you can add a chat to as many folders as you'd like.
You can add as many chats to a folder as you’d like.
Yes - group, channel, and community chats can be added to folders.
You can reorganize your folders so that they appear in any kind of order in your folders navigation bar:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Go to your Chats
screen
- Long-tap one of your folders
- Select Manage folders
- Long tap any folder and drag it to your desired location
Or
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap the More
tab and select Manage folders
(iOS: Tap on Reorder)
- Drag your desired folder and drop it to your desired location
- The folder navigation bar will be removed if there are no visible defined folders
- The All folder will always be the first one, and it cannot be moved
Folders cannot be merged, but you can add chats from one folder to another and delete the folder you wish to no longer use.
Manage folders
To rename a folder on your phone:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap Manage folders
- Tap on the folder you want to rename
- Tap on Rename in the context menu
- Edit the folder's name
- Tap on Done
To rename a folder on desktop:
- Open Viber on desktop
- Open the menu by clicking on your profile picture in the top-left corner
- Click on Settings
- Click Manage folders
- Click on next to the folder you want to rename
- Edit the folder's name
- Click on Done
To rename a folder from the context menu:
- Long-tap / right-click the desired folder
- Tap / click Rename folder
To delete a folder on your phone:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap Manage folders
- Tap on the folder you want to delete
- Tap on Delete folder
- Confirm by tapping Delete
To delete a folder on desktop:
- Open Viber on desktop
- Open the menu by clicking on your profile picture in the top-left corner
- Click on Settings
- Click Manage folders
- Click on the Trash can
next to the folder you want to delete
- Click on Delete to confirm
To delete a folder from the context menu:
- Long-tap / right-click the desired folder
- Tap / click Delete folder
You can have up to five custom folders.
Yes. To disable folders, you will need to delete all your existing folders.
Phone:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap Manage folders
- Tap on Delete folder
for each existing folder
- Confirm by tapping Delete
Desktop:
- Open Viber on desktop
- Open the menu by clicking on your profile picture in the top-left corner
- Click on Settings
- Click on Manage folders
- Click on the Trash can
next to each existing folder
- Click on Delete to confirm
Your folders will not be reset if you delete and then reinstall the Viber app.
Your folders will be reset if you deactivate your Viber account.
Folder limitations and privacy
Other than the Unread folder, folders cannot be hidden / password protected.
No, chats cannot be pinned inside folders.
No, folders cannot be muted because notifications are sent on a per-chat basis, but you can mute individual chats to no longer receive notifications from them.
No, hidden chats cannot be added to folders.
No. You can only add 1-on-1, group, channel, and community chats to a folder. Hidden chats, messages from Viber Pay, businesses and / or customers cannot be added to folders.
No, folders cannot be shared.
No, your contacts are not notified about being added to folders.
No, chats will not be removed from the All tab when they are added to a folder.
Unread folder
The Unread folder makes it easy to find and respond to messages that require your attention. It’s a dedicated folder that collects all your chats with unread messages, whether they’re 1-on-1, group, community, or bot chats.
- The Unread folder appears next to the All folder
- You can’t rename or delete the Unread folder, but you can hide it
The bubble with a number above a folder indicates the amount of chats in that folder with unread messages, not the total amount of unread messages in that folder.
Yes, to do so:
- Long-tap / right-click the desired folder
- Tap / click Mark all as read
You can hide the Unread folder if you don’t want it to be visible in your folder navigation bar.
Phone
- Open Viber on your phone
- Go to your Chats
screen (or tap on More
→ Manage folders
)
- Long-tap the Unread folder tab
- Select Hide folder
Desktop
- Open Viber on your computer

Right-click the Unread folder tab in the folder panel OR click on your Profile picture → Settings
→ Manage folders
- Select Hide folder
If you’ve hidden the folder, you can bring it back at any time:
Phone
- Open Viber on your phone
- Go to your Chats
screen
- Long-tap one of your existing folders (or tap on More
)
- Select Manage folders
- Find the Unread folder, long-tap it, and tap Show folder
Desktop
- Open Viber on your computer

- Select Manage folders
- Select Show folder next to the Unread folder
