Set up and activate an eSIM
Overview
With Viber’s eSIM, you can purchase and activate digital data plans for over 150 countries directly from your app.
Before setup
- An eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked device
- A stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular) for the initial purchase and setup
- The latest version of Viber on your Android or iOS device
Even if your phone is a newer model, it may not support eSIM for one of the following reasons:
- Where you bought your phone: Most iPhones bought in Mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao do not have eSIM technology. Instead, they have a SIM tray that holds two physical sim cards
- Work phones: If your phone was provided by your company, your office may have blocked the eSIM feature. If the Add eSIM button is greyed out or missing from your settings, contact your company’s IT department
- Monthly contracts: If you’re still paying for your phone through your mobile carrier (such as AT&T, T-Mobile, or Vodafone), your phone might be ‘locked’ to their network. You’ll need to contact your carrier to unlock your device before you can use a Viber eSIM

After purchase, you’ll see instructions in the eSIM section of your More menu.
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap More
- Tap eSIM
- Copy the SM-DP+ address* and Activation Code
- Go to your device Settings Cellular Add eSIM
- Tap Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the screen
- Paste the address and code into the required fields
- Follow the prompts to finish the setup
*The SM-DP+ address is a secure link you need to copy in order to download and install your eSIM
Your plan activates automatically once you land and connect to a local network.
If you’re running low on data, you can add more to your existing eSIM without needing to install a new one:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap More
- Tap eSIM
- Tap Add data next to your active plan (or from the eSIM details screen)
- Choose a new data package
Your new data will be added instantly to your total balance.
You can keep track of all your purchases in your Package history (found in the eSIM details screen). Packages will show one of the following statuses:
- Active: The plan you are currently using
- Not active: An upcoming plan that will start automatically once your current one ends or expires
- Expired: Plans that have run out of data or passed their validity date
Troubleshooting
In case you’ve successfully installed Viber eSIM but don't have internet access, please check and update the following configurations:
- Open your mobile device’s native settings
- Tap on Cellular or Mobile Data
- Enable Turn On This Line for Viber’s eSIM
- Enable Data Roaming (you might need to choose All Networks to connect to local foreign operators when abroad)
- Select Viber eSIM as Cellular Data
- Disable Allow Cellular Data Switching
- Tap on Cellular Data Network (or Mobile Data Network)
- Under the Cellular Data section, tap the APN field and type in the exact APN name - globaldata
- Leave the Username and Password fields blank
- Restart the device to re-establish connection
Staying safe
To keep your transactions safe, Viber uses advanced verification systems:
- All payments are processed securely through Stripe
- Occasionally, you may be asked to complete a 3DS verification (a quick security check from your bank) to authorize your purchase
Monitor your remaining data anytime in the eSIM section. If you have purchased multiple packages for the same country, your total available data will be combined into one easy-to-read progress bar
- Rakuten Viber eSIM provides mobile data only. It does not include a local phone number for traditional analog calls or SMS. However, you can still use Viber to make calls and send messages using your eSIM data
Adding data only works for the specific country of your active eSIM. If you are traveling to a new country, you will need to purchase and install a separate eSIM for that destination
When you add more data, only the data amount is combined. The number of days to use each package does not stack. Your next package will only begin its countdown once the current one is fully used or expires
