Solve activation and registration issues
Setting up your account is usually a quick process, but occasionally you may run into a technical bump. Use this guide to resolve issues with phone numbers, versions, and activation codes.
Number-related issues
The following international format should be used for entering a phone number on the Viber activation / registration page:
(Country code)(Area code, without leading 0s)(Phone number)
Rakuten Viber will automatically detect your country code based on your current location. You can adjust the country code if it is incorrect.
Errors that you may experience regarding your phone number include:
-
Number is too short: you haven't entered enough digits
- Make sure you aren't missing any digits, such as your area code
-
Number doesn't exist: You entered an invalid phone number
- Make sure you entered a number to which you can receive phone calls (not VoIP)
-
VoIP number: you entered a VoIP number
- Internet-based phone numbers cannot be used to activate / register on Viber
Contact us if the phone number you entered is correct and you're still receiving an error code.
To prevent spammers from using Viber, there is a limit to the number of times that you can attempt to activate / register an account. You will be notified if you reach that limit.
To try activating / registering again, please wait 24 hours.
Viber version
An outdated version of Viber may prevent you from activating / registering.

Activation
If you see an Activation failed error, it means Viber has temporarily restricted your phone number. This usually happens when our system detects activity that looks like spam. We know this can be frustrating if you didn't intend to break any rules, or if you've just inherited a recycled phone number that was previously flagged.
If this is your first time ever joining Viber, or if you believe your account was restricted by mistake, please reach out to us.
An activation failed error after entering your 2-step verification PIN is due to one of the following:
- The PIN you entered is incorrect: tap Try again and enter another PIN or tap Forgot PIN to reset your PIN using your email address. For more information, take a look at our article on 2-step verification.
- You're most likely using an old version of Viber: update to the latest version of Viber and try to activate the app on your phone again.
When you set up Viber, you’ll receive a six-digit code to verify your phone number. This code is mostly delivered through an automated phone call (Flash Call), or an SMS.
If the code doesn't arrive, try these steps to get connected:
- Check your connection: Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if your signal improves
- Check your SMS settings: Ensure your phone can receive standard text messages. If you’re abroad, you may need to turn on data roaming temporarily
- Request a call: If the SMS doesn't arrive, tap Activate via call. You’ll receive an incoming call; simply follow the instructions provided
In most regions, Viber uses a Flash Call to activate your account:
- You'll receive an incoming call from a random number
- You don’t need to answer the call
- Look at the last four digits of the calling number - this is your activation code
- Enter those four digits into the Viber activation screen
If you see an incorrect code error, it means the numbers entered don't match the ones sent to you.
- Double-check the source: If you received an SMS, check the six-digit code again. If it was a Flash Call, ensure you are using the last four digits of the phone number that called you
- Try a call: If the SMS code continues to fail, tap Activate via call to receive the code verbally
Important
To keep your account secure, Viber limits the number of activation attempts you can make. If you reach this limit, you may need to wait 24 hours before trying again. If you're still having trouble after a few tries, please contact us for help.
