Viber Desktop Settings and App Version
Personalize your Viber Desktop settings to make the app look and work according to your preferences.
To see which Viber app version you’re using, click on your profile picture next to the Search
field and look at the bottom of the menu.
Settings
How to open Viber settings on your desktop
- Open Viber on your Desktop
- Click on the cogwheel
(top right corner)
OR
- Open Viber on your Desktop
- Click on your profile picture next to the Search
field
- Click on Settings
Account
Name: The name that appears on your Viber profile. To change the name, take a look at the instructions in the How to Update My Profile article.
Number: The phone number that’s associated with your Viber account. Please note that you can only change your phone number on your phone.
Start up: If the toggle is ON
Viber will automatically start working in the background when you log into your computer, allowing you to receive notifications even if you haven’t opened the app.
Launch Viber in the background: Viber is launched with your computer, and appears minimized in the Windows notification area at the bottom corner of your screen.
Change language: Select a language in which you want to display the Viber app.
Message translations: Select in which language you would like to see translations. To learn more about message translations, take a look at the Chats Knowledge Base.

Viber Out
Current credit: See how much credit you currently have on your Viber Out account.
Add credit: Purchase Viber Out credit to start/continue making calls to any phone number in the world at a low rate.
View Rates: Click to see the ‘starting from’ rates for calling another country using Viber Out.
Viber Out calls: Click to see your Viber Out call history. (You will need to log into your Viber Out account.)
Viber Out payments: To see your payment history:
- Click on Viber Out payments
- Log into your Viber Out account
- Select Payments (in the left panel, under Activity)

Call settings (audio)
Input: Select the device that you want to use as your microphone. (Default device refers to the inbuilt laptop/computer microphone.)
Volume: Manually set the volume level of your microphone by clicking on the Volume bar. A completely purple bar means the microphone is at the highest volume level.
Level: See how much volume the microphone is capturing. If the bar remains white, it means that your microphone isn’t capturing any sound, and you should check/change the input device.
Automatically adjust my microphone volume level: Allow Viber to automatically adjust the microphone volume level by switching the toggle to ON
.
Output: Select the device that you want to use for your speakers. (Default device refers to the inbuilt laptop/computer speakers.)
Volume: Manually set the volume level of your speakers by clicking on the Volume bar. A completely purple bar means the speakers are set to the highest volume level.
Call settings (video)
Input: Select the device that you want to use as your camera. (Integrated webcam refers to the inbuilt camera in your laptop.)
You should be able to see what your camera is capturing underneath the Input selection. If you see a black box, it means that your camera isn’t working correctly, and you should check/change the input device.
Media
Keep media: Decide how long you want to keep media files that were sent to you on Viber. If you choose to delete them, they will be removed from both your Viber media files folder and your chat history on your computer.
Select if you want to keep your media files for:
- 1 week
- 1 month
- 1 year
- Forever
After that period, your files will automatically be deleted.
Media downloaded automatically: Allow Viber to download all received media files to a dedicated folder automatically. If you turn the toggle OFF
you will need to download each file manually by clicking on it (opening it). Any media files that aren’t opened will be deleted after 14 days as we don’t keep your data on Viber’s servers.
Play videos automatically: Any video sent in the chat will automatically play on a loop. If you turn this toggle OFF
you will need to click on the video for it to play.
Viber media files: All photos, videos, and voice messages received on Viber will be saved in the folder displayed in this section. When you deactivate or uninstall Viber from your desktop, this folder will be deleted.
To change the folder location:
- Click on the current folder
- Select a new destination
- Click Select folder
Viber documents: Any documents that you receive on Viber, such as PDF and .doc files, will be saved in the folder displayed in this section. When you deactivate or uninstall Viber from your desktop, this folder will not be deleted.

Photo quality You can choose the quality of the photos you send from the following options:
- Compressed (~180 KB)
- Good (~250 KB)
- Excellent (~650 KB)

Privacy and security
Viber-screen lock: Quickly lock your screen for extra privacy:
- Click on the toggle to switch the screen lock ON
- Create a password (4 or more characters)
- Re-enter your password
- Click Done
Use Ctrl+L (Cmd+L on Mac) to activate the screen lock (or click on Lock Viber in the menu under your profile picture); the Viber app won’t be accessible and you won’t receive notifications until you enter your password.
To turn OFF the screen lock, follow the same steps as above.
To change the password, turn the screen lock OFF and then turn it back ON again; you will be prompted to create a new password.
If you forget your password, you will need to log out of Viber by clicking on the forgot your code section or Log out. Please note that logging out of your account will deactivate your account on desktop and may cause you to lose some data.
Tip: You can also find this setting by clicking Set a Viber-screen lock in the menu under your profile picture.
Spam protection: Allow Viber to automatically scan* messages sent from people you’ve never spoken with to see if they contain harmful email addresses, links, or phone numbers. For more information, please review our article on Spam and Chain Messages.
Click on the toggle to turn the spam check ON
and click again to turn it OFF

*Viber’s security technology cannot read or store your data; it will only scan it and compare it to a database of harmful content.
Block list: See which contacts, phone numbers, and businesses are on your block list by clicking Manage. Click Unblock to remove the phone number from your block list.

Silence unknown callers (available in select countries only): Switch the toggle ON
to control who can call you and block calls from phone numbers that aren’t saved in your contact list.
Notes
- Although you won’t see or hear the call when it’s coming through, a missed call from the phone number will be displayed in your Chat list and Calls screen afterward.
- Switching this setting ON/OFF only affects incoming calls on your desktop and not your phone.
- You will be able to call and send a message to phone numbers not saved in your contact list regardless of the setting being ON or OFF.
Deactivate Viber on desktop: Deactivating Viber will log you out on your computer, remove all your data, and delete Viber’s media files folder. It will not affect Viber on your phone. For more information, please review our article on deactivating Viber.
Important
- If you activate Viber again, you will only be able to sync the desktop app with the data available on your phone.
- Data that was available on your desktop but not on your phone won’t be restored.
- You may lose some media files, especially ones received over 14 days before reactivation.
If you are sure that you want to deactivate Viber on your desktop, click Deactivate.

Notifications
Choose how Viber displays notifications on your screen:
Show notifications for:
- Messages and calls - a notification will pop up for all received messages and calls.
- Calls only - you will only receive notifications for calls.
Play sounds for:
- All messages and all calls - a sound will play for all received messages and calls.
- Aggregated messages and all calls - if many messages are sent at the same time, a sound will only play for the first message. It won’t play for the following messages until you either open the message or several minutes pass between two received messages. A sound will play for all incoming calls.
- Calls only - a sound will only play for incoming calls.
Appearance
Themes: You can change the color of Viber panels and fields. Click to select the light or dark theme.
Follow operating system theme: Automatically sync Viber with your current desktop theme preferences by switching the toggle to ON
.
Set default background: Change your chat screen background by clicking on the empty box (or previously selected background).
You can choose an image from Viber’s gallery or take one already saved on your computer (drag and drop the image from your desktop, or click on Choose image and select one of the images saved in your folders).
App version
If you contact Support you may be asked to provide the Viber app version you are currently using.
To see your version number:
- Open Viber on your Desktop
- Click on your profile picture next to the Search
field
The Viber app version will be displayed at the bottom of the menu.
