Back up and restore your chat history
Overview
Keep your conversations safe by backing up your chat history. Whether you’re getting a new phone or reinstalling Viber on your current device, you can easily restore your messages, photos, and videos.
To keep your history, you must use your phone to back up or transfer your data. These features are not available on desktop or tablet (unless it's your primary device).
Prerequisites
- Phone number: Your backup is tied to your phone number. You must use the same phone number to restore your chat history
- Platforms: Chat history is connected to your phone's operating system (Android or iOS). You cannot transfer history between different platforms (e.g., Android to iPhone)
- 2-step verification: If you have 2-step verification set up, you’ll be prompted to enter your PIN
Method 1: Wi-Fi transfer (New phone only)
If you have your old phone and your new phone next to each other, you can transfer your history directly over Wi-Fi without needing a cloud backup.
- Both phones must be on the same platform (Android to Android / iOS to iOS)
- Both phones must have Viber version 25.0 or higher
- Both phones must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled
- Activate Viber on your new phone using your existing number
- When prompted to transfer your history, tap Get Started on both devices
- Use your new phone to scan the QR code shown on your old phone
- Keep both devices close and connected to Wi-Fi until the transfer is complete
Method 2: Cloud backup and restore
Use this method to keep a continuous safety net or to restore your history if you no longer have your old device.
To use the cloud, Viber must be connected to your storage account.
Android
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Viber Backup
- Tap on Settings in the Not connected to Google Drive section
- Select the account you'd like to back up your history to
iOS
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap on your Apple ID (at the top of the screen)
- Tap on iCloud
- Make sure that Viber is switched ON
In the Viber Backup screen, you can:
- Auto backup: Choose Daily, Weekly, or Monthly to ensure your data is always safe
- Manual backup: Tap Back Up to create a fresh save (recommended before switching phones or reinstalling)
- Photos & Videos: Select if you want to include media in your backup
When you reinstall Viber or move to a new device, you will be prompted to restore your content after activation. This is only possible if you're using the same phone number and the same Google Drive or iCloud account. Tap on Restore Now.
If you skip this, you can do it manually later:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Viber Backup
- Tap on Restore
- Select Restore Now
Restore stickers and Viber Out
Once your chats are restored, sync your purchases to your new device:
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Purchases
- Android: Tap on Restore subscriptions and tap on Restore sticker packs
- iOS: Tap on Restore to sync all purchases at once
- Text messages, photos, and videos (if selected)
- Group and Community memberships
- Profile details
- Purchased stickers and Viber Out plans
