Transfer Your Chat History From One Phone to Another
If you get a new phone, you will need to transfer your Viber account and chat history from your old phone to your new phone.
Activating Viber on your new phone will deactivate Viber on your old phone, so make sure you read all the instructions carefully!
Notes
- If you’re changing your phone number as well, please follow the instructions in the Change Your Phone Number article first, and then come back to this page.
- You will be prompted to enter your PIN in each step if you have 2-step verification set up.
Changing Platforms (Android <> iOS)
Your chat history is connected to the platform that your phone uses, i.e. Android or iOS. There is no way to transfer the chat history between the two platforms.
Unfortunately, this means that if you switch platforms (for example, your old phone was a Samsung Galaxy and your new phone is an iPhone), you will not be able to restore your Viber chat history.
Step 1: Back up your history on your old phone
Before you begin, make sure that Viber is set up to back up either to your Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS).
- Open Viber on your phone
- Tap on More
(Android)
(iOS)
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Viber Backup
- Tap Auto backup to select how often you’d like to sync your data:
● Daily
● Weekly
● Monthly
● Off
7. Select if you want your Photos and Videos to also be backed up
8. Tap on Back Up Now
Step 2: Activate Viber on your new phone
Download Viber onto your new phone and activate it using the phone number connected to your Viber account.
Step 3: Restore your chat history
After activating Viber, you will be prompted to Restore Viber Content. This process takes time and data, so it’s best to be connected to wifi.
You can delay restoring your chat history and manually complete this step at a later time. Please note that any new messages that you receive in the meantime will not be saved as the restore will revert your chat history to what it was at the time of backup.
To manually restore your chat history:
- Open Viber on your new phone
- Tap on More
(Android)
(iOS)
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Viber Backup
- Tap on Restore
- Select Restore Now
After your chat history is restored your photos and videos will continue restoring in the background, allowing you to use Viber while you wait.
Step 4: Restore the Sticker Market and Viber Out purchases
You can easily restore purchases that you made in the Sticker Market, as well as your Viber Out subscriptions:
- Open Viber on your new phone
- Tap on More
(Android)
(iOS)
- Tap on Settings
- Tap on Account
- Tap on Purchases
- Select Restore subscriptions to sync Viber Out plans and credits (Android only)
- Select Restore sticker packs to sync sticker packs you have purchased (Android only)
- Tap on Restore* (iOS)
*Tapping Restore on iOS will sync Viber Out plans/credits and sticker packs that you have purchased at the same time
